Sometimes they want to hear opinions or they have problems finding enough information or don't know where to seek the information they need in the first place. There are some lazy people too though, who would rather have somebody else search for information for them than searching for it themselves.
Personally I ask questions to hear opinions and different views on things and to learn to understand other people's way of thinking and outlook on life.
