Or is a lie a lie? i am guilty of that at least once in my life.
I only do it if it saves the feelings of the person in question.

There are 3 kinds of lies.

1. Lies people tell for their own personal gain - such as: "This car was only driven by a little old lady to church on Sundays." The teller of this lie obviously hopes to profit from the telling of the lie. These lies tend to be the most vicious and harmful. They are used and created intentionally to deceive, hurt, create chaos and mislead.

2. Lies of omission -- when we know the truth but for some reason decide to not tell it. This can be to protect ourselves, others or the person we are telling the lie to.

As in, "I don't know why the boss is calling you in for a meeting" when you know darn well the boss is about to fire them.

We tell these because we don't want to be involved, we perhaps know information we shouldn't know, we don't want to jeopardize our own positions (socially or at work) or we don't want to be held responsible for knowing the information and not warning the other person.

3. Social White Lies (can also be lies of omission) that we tell when perhaps a new hair cut isn't flattering on a friend, but we smile and tell them it looks good anyway!! Yes it's a lie, but here we measure what possible good would it do to tell them it looks unflattering - when that would only hurt their feelings???

When is a little white lie dangerous? When the outcome of the person not knowing the truth could cause them harm.

White Lies in the Family that are OK to Tell:

1. 80 year old Aunt Martha gives you a box of chocolate every year for Christmas that you don't like, she's gotten fat and has died her hair pink in an attempt to make it red:

By all means tell Aunt Martha she looks great and thank her for the chocolate. Anything else would just be mean.

And as always --

A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down -- so when the truth is absloutely needed - - go out of your way to not do more damage than necessary when telling it.

Ahhh I love hypocrites. Calling you a liar when everyone has lied in their life at some point of time.

I hate liars and I try to tell the truth as much as possible. My trick is when someone asks something don't answer it directly. Be smart and change the subject. OR! Say something like is so and so cheating on me? I've never seen her with anyone else. It's still wrong I guess but technically your not lying and YOU never saw her with another guy but you might know about it.

Best tip of advice: Don't lie - at all

Yes, it's wrong. You can save the feelings of the person in question for a little while, but imagine how terrible they would feel when they found out YOU lied to them?

It's ok to tell the truth tactfully but it's not ok to lie and mislead someone who is depending on you to be honest with them. I understand what you meant by 'trying to spare a person's feelings' but I think if you tell that person the truth in private, they would appreciate it.

I don't believe in lying but everyone does it. Although you are trying to save someone feeling I think you should just tell them the truth. If they found out that you were lying then that would hurt them more.

it depends huge lies lead to nothing but trouble. yet the little lies like telling a person they look great when they are sick seem ok. yet lies just get bigger and bigger and they can get you tangled in a great big web that you cant get yourself out of.
