As an HR Manager in a hotel I usually look for a number of things, some of which you can influence some you can't. For every interview I do I have a job description and person specification which I use to screen and select individuals based on the requirements of the job - these are things you can't influence, you either have them or you don't. For 'soft' side of the interview - attitude, personality etc you can change. Arriving slightly early, being conscious of your personal presentation - be smart no matter what job you're applying for a suit and tie is good! Smile (it helps relax you and makes you look friendly!) Listen to the question, pay attention to the interviewer and answer their question, not what you information you want to give them! The everyday examples are good, it doesn't have to be a major event to show that you can think on your feet and overcome adversity.

a couple of other small things; brush your teeth, freshen your breath, check your flys guys, brush your hair, take your sunglasses off and make sure your mobile is on silent or off!!

9/10 someone's attitude will clinch the choice on a candidate - if you have the right attitude but don't know how to do something I can teach you. I can't teach you to have a personality or be service orientated!

you have practically answered your own question only you need to word it differently. In order to solve the problem of a shortage of money and not to rely on family you took a job within a fast food restaurant and then went on to gain more experience in customer service within the hotel industry. All this led you to be the person you are and of course having to manage at university made you ppreciate the lessons you learnt in previous employment and gave you expeience to cope out on your own. So you had a problem of no money and little experience in life and you made a positive effort to solve all that by doing all you have.
whatever job you do remember even if you dont like it it is all experience and makes you the person you become.

had you resolved any situation in the hotel? Dealing with a complaint? Using your initiative to resolve the situation?

First you need to think of the problems that you have encountered, you know this best yourself, perhaps you could find examples from your university projects? Or have you been given a task/problem to do at work that you need to think of the solution yourself. Maybe tell us more what you do in your hotel jobs to help us find examples of your problem solving skills? Good luck

Instead of trying to spin it so you stand out, just be honest. For example, if the problem at the hotel was a room that was not satisfactory to a guest, tell what your part was that solved the problem. Also you can use your univ. days to illustrate person-to-person problem solving.
Think of several, write them down, and pare them to a few. Be straight and to-the-point, not longwinded.
Good luck to ya.

I've been asked this yesterday at a ethical study day:
On one rainy night at 2 in the morning, you driving pass a bus stop. there is 3 people standing in the rain.
one is an old lady, the other is a childhood friend that saved you life once, and the third person is a celebrity.
you have one seat in your car, who will you give a lift?

i would give the keys to my best friend to take the old lady home and i will sit with the celebrity.

Alot of the time an employer is looking to see how you have solved the problem personally, how YOU deal with a certain situation, good luck! ; )

"i didn't know how to think of an answer to this question so I cheated and went on the web" ? Perhaps not.

Maybe think about some things from your private life ? Choosing which uni course to do.

They know your history ( assuming they've seen the CV ) so will not expect world affectnig decisions.

After taking a Mediation Workshop the I use some of their lessons as a foundation. Mediate, facilitate, initiate, you can use this formula for just about any situation that you have had.

You have a problem now.

When you get the answer, write about how you got it (overcame the problem).

EDIT:
Actually you don't have a problem any more because I've solved it.
