I got my first tattoo after my grandson died. I had an angel with his name and the dates of his birth and death---it was the love for him and a memorial to his short life

Everybody was doing it. I had to be cool too, ya know? That was when I was about 16. Then when I grew up a little bit, I had to get the terribly ugly tattoos that I got as an ignorant child covered up. I realized at that time that tattoos could be beautiful. I am now addicted. I have a dragon on the top of my right foot, a vine and butterfly on the outside of my left ankle, a beautiful hummingbird and lower on the outside of my right lower leg, and a bracelet around my right wrist. My next one is going to be a blossoming Japanese cherry tree going up my back on the right side from my rump to my shoulder! I can not wait for this one!

I have a very small tattoo on my back of my star sign and i thought really long and hard before I had it done, i wanted something that would forever be a part of me, like my name, star sign, etc. I also wanted to be non-conformist. Only people who have seen me without a shirt on have seen my tattoo and that is only my mom and my hubby. I don't go flaunting around in people's faces. I got it for myself and for no-one else and therefore no-one else needs to see it. Trust me it doesn't hurt as much as you would think, it hurts more if you have it done on a bone (like your ankle, toe, shoulderblade, etc) than if you have it done on a muscle as the muscle only ends up being bruised for day or so...
Good luck if you are SERIOUS about having one.
I know a lot of tattoo parlours in South Africa will not do a tattoo on you if you are drunk or on drugs or anything like that...
Think long and hard before you have it done, don't do it to be cool or impress anyone or for a lark....

believe it or not, since the 1980s or so there have been regulations against getting tattoos when drunk. not only does it make your blood thinner and make you more likely to bleed to death from getting a tattoo but it also leads to more infections. they even make you fill out a form and any real tattoo artist worth their ink wont tattoo someone thats intoxicated. as for why i have mine many many tats its because i love the idea of being even more unique and having something visual that represents what i care about and feel strongly about and that no one else can ever take away from me.

I got my tattoo almost 15 years ago. I wanted to physically mark on my body how I was feeling... to have a physical representation of the whole-ness and happiness I was feeling. I got a celtic circle between my shoulder blades. It was a powerful experience. And ever since then I find it easy to think back on the feeling I was trying to capture and remind myself of what I was like then.

I got mine the minute I turned 18, because until then my parents wouldn't let me get one. Mine is no my ankle and it is the comedy/tragedy mask that represents my emotions that I try to cover up. If I had it to do over I would have still gotten it, but had it placed on the inside of my ankle rather than the outside.

I had always wanted one, but too scared to get one. So, I took a friend with me to get one too. I let him go first though. I love every tatoo I have and do not regret any of them.

What motivated to NOT get a tatoo was seeing them on people when they get older. Sometimes you cannot recognize what it was supposed to be!

I wanted to piss off my parents. 11 tattoos later and I think I've done it.
