Beside being stylish it was so company could go into the parlor, friends and family could go into the main house. Often the doors were at 90 degree angle on the front porch, meaning you walked straight into one front door but the other would be to your side on the porch. The one on the side generally entered the dining or music room and that was the familiar door. The one straight on was the one where company went into....to the parlor where they did not have open access to the rest of the home.
The second advantage was for air flow....As also is the case for the "shotgun" hallways in the south where the hall runs from the front door to the back door....keeping a large breezeway for the hot summer.

it has to do with heating. Before central air, people tended to heat only their kitchens, so doors were installed to keep the air in the kitchen. Doors on stairwells, leading out of the kitchen. If a room had a door, such as a living room it is likely there was a stove or fireplace in that room and the door served to keep the heat in.
A lot of modern home owners would do well to remember this
easy and cheap method of conservation.
I live in rural Canada. We have some pretty strange doors folk often ask about; a door from an UPSTAIRS room leading to the outside. Any idea why?
it's so when it snows so darn much, you don't have to dig out!
i think with global warming, though, these doors are fast becoming unnecessary.

I don't know that's crazy. Someone just built a really nice home here an put two front doors on it too. I thought it totally ruined the house. I think that maybe the older houses had multiple families...ya think?

during that time, air conditioning was not available. it was for the purpose of adding ventilation and air flow in order to make the dwelling cooler....

i think it has to do with social hierarchy, so that the personnel do not enter where the lords do, men do not mingle with women and mothers in law do not enter where their daughters in law do..
