My friend works as a nurse, she literally saves people's lives. She gets £20k a year.

Beckham 'works' as a footballer, he kicks balls around a big field. He's quite good at it, apparently. He gets paid £20k a week.

How did society end up cherishing idiots?

Society cherishes idiots because at least half the population have below average IQ. People with higher IQs tend to be more diverse in their interests and less influenced by peer pressure, whereas lower IQ people tend to run with the herd. Thus the below-average IQ crowd form a larger collective marketing block with unified tastes than the diverse, fragmented higher-IQ group which constitutes many small markets.

Because most media organisations are capitalist. profit-seeking, and in competition with other similar organisations, they will seek the attention of the large low-IQ group as a priority as this is the largest market. In the past, when the media were less commercialised, less competitive, and had more of a public duty, they tended to have more high-quality, informative content (although arguably there was less freedom of information).

It doesn't end there. Because media channels are flooded with drivel to pander to the low-IQ herd, there is a tendency for people with above average IQs to succumb to the pressure to conform as well. They will adopt a social disguise and pretend to like football, say they support a team etc when in the company of others in order to maintain their popularity and sense of belonging. Eventually this pretense can become fact, and they forget that there was ever a time when they might have thought of football as 'well, a bit crap actually'.

Because thousands of people are prepared to pay up to £200 a ticket to watch a football match, or £50 for their team's shirt, or £40 a month to watch matches on TV - and choose to buy clothes, have their haircut in a certain way or buy an number of products, purely because someone famous endorses them. And yet these same people would probably scream the house down if you demanded 1p more per pound in income tax to provide a better health service, education system etc. This year's Big Brother voting scandal was a perfect example - people who would happily sit at home night after night watch the antics of a group of wannabes and paying 50p a hit to have their pound of flesh on a Friday night when the next z-lister was evicted - these people went mental when BB apparently changed the rules and allowed the evictees back in. Because that 50p, from that phone call would have been spent where, exactly? on helping stop poverty? finding a cure for cancer or any of a number of charities, No. Probably on voting for the next idiot, or towards a pint, or fags or..... *sigh*

Fame has so much to answer for, I do not rate these football players or stars, they are not worth the bank account they put their money into, nurses are so poorly paid and have to put up with untold hassle with no thanks for what they do, my hubby had an accident at work a few years ago, those nurses on his ward were fantastic and let me telephone them at any hour of the day to ask how he was, I bought them a huge box of chocolates to share at with their coffees and was gobsmacked when they turned round and said, thank you so very much, this is a very rare thing these days, nurses should be paid so much more and be treat like human beings instead of the punch bags they are these days, we do not need rich footy players as they do nothing.

Great Britain... the land of the non-celebrity...
Name another country that would entertain the notion of having these as 'celebs' :
Jordan
Jimmy Nesbitt
Edith Bowman
Mark Durden-Smith
Colin Murray
Brian Dowling
Jade Goody
Ian Wright
Charlotte Church
Sian Lloyd
Jeremy Spake
etc etc etc
Slightly off topic, I know, but just fancied a rant...

We have lost sight of what society needs in this "leisure orientated" period. Of course we need nurses, doctors, "good" teachers, scientists, and old fashioned politicians who put the needs of the public before their own greed. Beckham is not the best example to cite, he at least is good at what he does and contributes to youth charities; those who are complete parasites are the celebrities continually featured in glossy mags. and idiots such as Jonathan Woss who is paid thousands of our money without our agreement - at least Beckam's money comes from his supporters with their consent. Society as a whole is sick and the majority have stupid priorities - at least those who pander to the celebrity status of all the "non-persons" with nothing to contribute to the common good.
Unfortunately "society" has always cherished idiots and it is a case of too much money in the hands of other idiots.

because its good people like your friend who realise that what he is doing is right in life, so he is content in doing so. Its the people with problems like insecurity issues and greed and being power mad who stand on anyone to get to the top, therefore the world is then run by idiots. Ive found the most profound and important people in life are unknowns and unsung heroes. But you only have to look at the sales of jordans book to realise that it is not a commonly shared oulook.

Our Societies(forgive me,Yahoo) are made in a way to penalize upstat persons and
reward the downstats! This is the way Governments treat their populace nowadays!
Of course,David is an athlete and a food ball VIP, and sure kicks the ball and bend it as
no one else does ; and he has been through a lot of training to achieving that virtue!
But generally, the antisocials get the prize and the rest kick the buckets!

Ciao.............John-John.
