I worked for an employer in Connecticut for 1 year. I was doing a higher level job which paid more money than what I was hired to do. My employer promised to promote me and 6 months went by and I still never got the money promised or the promotion. I asked to go back to my old job and I was told they still had noone to do the job I was currently doing. Can I quit and collect unemployment based on a promissory estoppel by the employer?

Call your unemployment office and find out.

Better still, find another job first and then quit.

With nothing in writing, I doubt you're eligible for state unemployment benefits.

Before you up and leave, put your ducks in a row. Write down everything you have done in this new position. Projects, training, hiring, etc... This should be a long list after 1 year - use your old calendars to confirm trips, deadlines,etc...

You have achieved above the level your employer expected. You exceeded the standards of the position you were hired for, something everyone should be doing. Continue to succeed and use these skills as your basis for employment. Put out some feelers, with documentation to prove project success and responsibilities, and see if there are positions available in your area. The grass isn't always greener, but your current employer doesn't need to know that.
Don't burn any bridges. But you now understand you can succeed at a higher level. Good luck...
