Can someone please tell me, how soon after conception can a heartbeat be detected ? My friend has had IVF treatment, the embryo was placed in the womb about 3 weeks ago, she went for a scan today ( as according to their " official " dates, she's infact 6 weeks pregnant ) ..but no heartbeat was found ! Is this anything to worry about ? She has another scan next week, but she's concerned and I would like to be able to reassure her ! Is it too soon to detect a heartbeat, or has it failed ?
Thank you .

Thank you all so very much, I feel better now ( it is what I thought too, a bit early, but it was the clinic that made her have the scan ) Thanks again, I will try and reassure her .

it could be a little too soon. tell your frined not to worry . Worry is one of the worst things to do during pregnancy. If God meant for it to work all will be well. I was 4 1/2 months pregnant with my forst child before any test proves that I was pg..So not everyone or everything folows a protocol of life. Somtimes our bodies and babies have a mind of their own.Tell your friend to relax. She cannot change whatever is going to happen. I hope all goes well and the baby stays and grows.

A embryo's heart starts to form at around the 5th week. A heartbeat can usually be seen on an ultrasound scan between 6-7 weeks.
So I would try not to worry.
As you said your friend had the embryo implanted only three weeks ago, so she can't be 6 weeks pregnant. Even when she has a scan next week and she is only 4 weeks pregnant she still may not hear it.
Hope everything goes well.

My midwife tried to read my heartbeat at 9 weeks because i was already showing and they thought i might be further on but couldnt' hear it. the same thing happened at the hospital at 11 weeks and still no heartbeat so they did a scan and there was the tiny flickering heartbeat! I just had a huge bump and a little baby plus if she's only 6 weeks it might be another 6 or so before a heartbeat could be traced. tell her not to worry, its perfectly normal (and i think a little irresponsible to try that early and not tell her its normal not to hear it let alone try it so soon!) and wait for her scan, they're much more reliable.

I conceived through IVF and had my first scan 3 wks after transfer and the heartbeat was detected with a vaginal ultrasound.
The clinics can be very sure of dates as they know exactly when they were implanted.
Fingers crossed for her.

If on an ultrasound at 6 weeks internal the baby's heart beat can be seen and depending on the machine they are using can be heard.
As far as external 10-12 weeks, ushually closer to 12 weeks.

usually you are able to hear your babies heartbeat at about 13 weeks but when i had my son 6 years ago i was told that sometimes it is very hard to detect due to the fact of the baby moving all the time

It depends on the baby. They couldn't here my baby's heartbeat for the first 12 weeks. But they were able to hear it after that.
