Influenza (or flu for short) is a viral infection. Sure there are lots of different strains of it, but none are officially called 'summer flu', they all have funny medical names like A/H1N1.

Regardless of the strain the symptoms are almost always the same...

Fever (usually high)
Headache
Extreme tiredness
Dry cough
Sore throat
Runny or stuffy nose
Muscle aches
Stomach symptoms

I would guess that 'summer flu' is just a funny name that people give to the virus when they get it in the summer!

Thanks for the interesting question!

It's usually just a bad cold caught during the summer. Cold germs are around all the time, but you are most likely to catch a cold when you are overtired, rundown, chilly or otherwise vulnerable. This can happen at any time of year - especially with air conditioning recirculating the same air.... Open a window instead!

It is a condition which strikes whenever the weather is too nice to go to work. It also can occur when there is a major sporting event on the telly.
