I don't know about the chewing gum, but you should place a slice of bread between your teeth while you are cutting your onion to avoid crying eyes.

yes, you will cry.
One of the things you should do when cutting onions is to run the cold water and look at it reguarly (don't cut yourself) - this is what I do & it helps.
Another thing you can do is to keep your mouth open so that the vapour goes to your mouth not your eyes. - Not too sure about that one but my friend does it all the time!!!!

Yes you will, its the onions scent that makes you cry not the fact that your mouth is open.
