Well, the male thingy is some times called the bird and the female area is a rug or carpet, so you got the bird shag and the carpet shag getting together and they are shagging

Well think of the word shag and carpet. Shagging is done on shag carpet. I whould say some guy in the old days coined the term while he was shagging on shag carpet. While in the process the woman under him yells out "OH SHAG." the word shag is born.

Well... if a shag on a rock is something of an outcast..... something alone or lonely.....What do you reckon a shag with no mention of the rock would construe??? Not trying to be smart..... It just struck me..... I knew the word and connotation long before the dvd. Bit sad!!! Now that I've had time to imbibe I also realised that I did so like the "come up and see me"from the same era!!!! Are we CYCLIC????

I think it hails from the days in Suburbia where shag pile was all the rage and so was having a quick bonk on the shag pile.

My theory

I reckon you started off with a shag-pile rug. People 'had relations' on it, and said they were shagging. And the name widened into 'having relations' anywhere.

Complete and utter guess.

The other option is that when people talk about 'the birds and the bees', there's one particular bird they're referring to!

Maybe because some have referred to that area on a males body as his bird....and having sex is a dance of love.....and uh, maybe the first one to coin the term had some really good rug burns afterwards so they called it "shagging".....I don't know....

It probably started with a bird dancing on the carpet, and progressed from there

It's funny how words begin to take on a sexual meaning. I remember when queer and gay meant odd and happy, respectively. Maybe eventually every word in our language will mean something sexual. I think that would be kinda fun.
