I am getting married in April next year and am about to book a honeymoon. We are looking for a beach holiday - but somewhere with a little bit of culture too so that we can do a bit of exploring.

I would also appreciate it if you have any recommendations of places NOT to go!

Hi Congratulations!
I got married this april (easter actually) on the beach in Antigua.

My wife and I stayed at the most beautiful quiet retreat called Galley Bay (if you look at trip advisor you'll get the idea of how happy people are with it!)

We stayed in one of the Gaugain Cottages which are fantastic have their own little splash pool outside you bedroom door.
The food was incredible, it was like the best resturant over here and is totally all inclusive. with named brand drinks and real champagne included just ask for it at the bar.

It is quiet!! So, if you like nobbly knee competitions and a hetctic entertainment schedule go to "Sandals!

We loved it and couldn't have gone anywhere nicer.
Btw All the people holidaying there were wonderfull too!! I could have trusted any of them with my wallet!

Also the Island of Antigua was wonderfull and all the people we met around the islands were so freindly even in the outskirts of ST. Johns the people were very welcoming and we didn't feel insecure just walking around!

Antigua ... Paradise found!

I think if you want beaches with culture then I would say go to Spain because the beaches are great. Costa del Sol is really nice but I think the Balaric Islands would be the best bet. Ibize town is actually really stuningly beautiful. Me and my husband still have not gone on ours but we have talked about Malta or Egypt on the Red Sea. I also think Croatia would be really nice.

My friends had theirs in Cuba and loved it.

Some other places are Dubai for a little bit of Middle Eastern experience with all the comforts of home or Koh Sumai, Thailand because it has nice beaches and nice hotels and resorts plus there is some cool stuff to see on the Island.

For don't goes: I hated the Dominican Republic, the people seemed rude and angry and there wasn't much to see outside the hotel. While I did see some lovely things, I didn't enjoy Turkey, again because of the people and the resorts were not up to my expectations. For the beach I wouldn't recommend Nice France, although it is a nice place to go but the beaches are rocky. Some one suggested Barcalona or Seville. Barcalona is a big dodgy city so again go to the Balaric Islands or Costa del Sol. Seville is beautiful but the beach is about 2 hours away on the Costa del Sol. From Costa del Sol you can certainly take a day trip to Seville, which I would recommend as it is very cultural.

I went to Jamaica and stayed at Sandals. It was well worth the money and we had the opportunity to explore the beautiful island.

There are plenty of All Inclusive hotels in the Caribbean and it's your honeymoon so you want it to be the extra bit special.

The winter season (December to April) has the nicest climate, hot and sunny by day and warm at night. In July, August and September particularly (but in fact any day when it is still and there is no cloud) it can be very hot.

There are two rainy seasons, in May, and from August to October, but even then it doesn't rain every day. If you do go walking in remote places or in the mountains, then you will probably want to take a waterproof jacket.

Grand Cayman - St. Thomas - Maui/Kauai - Bahamas = Yes! and easy if new to remote places. There are higher inspection standards in these restaurants, too, so little chance of getting sick.

More remote experiences: Acapulco - Cabo San Lucas - Puerta Vallarta - Cancun - Matzalan - St Lucia - Barbados = Yes -- many romantic getaways and exploring opportunities.

Others: Cozumel - Jamaica - San Juan - Martinique - Antigua = No, due to my experiences of being approached to buy drugs at all these places, and little consideration for your safety at some. Not as safe for exploration. The diving currents at Cozumel can be wicked and I know of a bride that did not come home with her groom because the guide didn't do a flip to help save him.

Just my two cents -- best wishes on your life's journey ahead.

I went to Japan for my honeymoon in April and that was a nice time of year but I'd recommend Kenya for most people. It's great there- the people are friendly, the resorts are so good (esp. Mount Kenya safari club and Mara safari club)- the beach resorts at Mombasa are supposed to be good and safari is such a cool thing to do.
Check the weather in Kenya though because it might be rainy season. Trailfinders or someone should be able to tell you.

I went to Mexico - three nights in Mexico City doing the cultural sights etc then ten nights in the Riveria Maya (flew to Cancun then about 30-40 minutes transfer) the hotel was Xhu Pa Palace - an ecological hotel and at the time we went (beginning of October) it was really quiet. You just need to be aware of what the weather will be like at the time you are due to go. A FANTASTIC website that reviews hotels is www.tripadvisor.co.uk - it's excellent and you can read visitors reviews and see candid photos. Happy wedding and honeymoon.

How about an island in the Caribbean? They're pretty inexpensive, beautiful, and have lots of interesting culture. Don't do a cruise. I have a friend who says she wants to do a cruise for her honeymoon, but I wouldn't recommend it. The staterooms are tiny and they're super crowded. You want to try and find a place where the two of you will have plenty of time to spend time with each other.

The Mexican Riviera along the east coast of Yucatan Peninsula. The flagship destination is Cancun, but there are many smaller more pleasant towns and beaches in the vicinity with more local flavor.
For a bit of 'exploring', inland are the monuments, pyramids & sites of the ancient Mayan Empire.
Yucatan is considered one of safest locales in Mexico so that you can dismiss all those 'war stories'.

Do a multicentre holiday in Egypt

Spend a couple of days in Cairo, then do a Nile cruise, a couple of days in Luxor and then fly over to the Red Sea for a week lying on the beach.

You'll love it. The sights are beyond belief. Yes - we've all seen the pyramids on the telly, but when you see them for yourself they take your breath away. You will truly have a honeymoon you will NEVER forget!

I personnaly would like to goto Egypt. The place has alot to offer of history and culture. The same old beach honeymoon seems so bland. If you are adventourous there are so many places to go.
