The ONLY product you can use is 'CABINET RESCUE',...BUT it states,"Do not use on counter tops!" It is used to paint "Formica" cabinets, plastic shower walls, ect. You are better off putting new MICA over the old.It can be done as I was in the trade for several years. You might want to consult someone who does this.It can be very tricky. This can be a do it yourself project. You can buy the Home Depot 1-2-3 book or the Lowes book.It will show you how.

Yes.. of course you can paint it.. but I guarantee that in short time you will not be happy... Paint does not adhere well to laminates even if a primer is put on it first.. The ONLY way to restore the laminate you have is to replace it.. It is not that expensive but the labor to do that is a bit pricey

To answer strictly...YES,,,but I wouldn't. Your point about food contact is why.
Most inexpensive would be new laminate, but you could tile it, or go to an HD or Lowes, and but a plastic sheeting, then cut, trip, glue.
If this counter top is one you intend to live with for a long term, I suggest take your time, do a good job, and enjoy.

No you cannot paint it. The paint will peel eventually. Laminate is non-porous and as such the paint would not 'hold' properly.
You may want to change the counter tops or remove the laminate, smooth the surface and tile it.

Painting on the laminate top will not work.
Paint will definitely peel off over time.
what u can do is, put a tempered glass panel over your kitchen counter top.
Or u can put granite slab over it.

Paint it, what?? Don't think that would work unless you strip the old surface, put a top coat on and then paint it and what kind of paint you'd use have no clue. I'd just buy new counter tops to be honest with you, that's just my thoughts though.

You can re-laminate it pretty easy. It is cheaper than buying a new top and you can pick any color you like.
Ask your local DIY if they can order, usually it is not something they have on stock in the size you would want.

it will peel & scratch - replace it or re-laminate it (not as hard as you think) - I had the same problem in an old house
