A women gets her period once a month, usually about every 28 days. At that time she will expereince bleeding from her vaginal canal. This is because throughout the month her utueres has been building up a heavy linning full of blood vessels. This is to provide a nice enviroment for a fertalized egg to implant in. If there is no egg fertalized that month, then the body will shed the linning. The linning is what the menstral blood is composed of. For the most part it is not painful for a women to have her period, though she may expereince cramping.

Hey, you asked.

Probably the most talked about event of puberty for a girl is her period. Getting a period is another way of talking about menstruation.

Within about a year after beginning her growth spurt, most girls will have their first period. This marks the beginning of a girl's life as a young woman. In some cultures, this is celebrated publicly. Others choose to be more private about it. Some girls can't wait for their first period to come, while others may dread it or feel neutral about it. No matter how anyone feels, it's an important event in life and part of the normal process of becoming an adult.

Most American girls start their periods between the ages of 9 and 15. There really isn't any way you can tell the day or week you'll get your first period. There also isn't really any way you can make it come sooner or delay it from happening.

During each period, the inner lining of the uterus is shed through the vagina, the passage that connects the inner reproductive organs to the outer sex organs or genitals. This lining is mostly blood and other tissues that have been building up since the last period. The purpose of this blood is to provide nutrients for a fertilized egg if one were to become pregnant. Girls start having their periods early in their lives, but most don't decide to start a family till they've already been having their periods for many years. Most women stop having periods when they are between 45 and 55 years old. This is called menopause.

Menstruation is the term given to the periodic discharge of blood, tissue, fluid and mucus from the reproductive organs of sexually mature females. The flow usually lasts from 3 - 6 days each month and is caused by a sudden reduction in the hormones estrogen and progesterone.

It is hormones that govern this process. Hormones are a chemical substance, produced by an organ, gland or special cells, that is carried through the bloodstream to regulate the activity of certain organs.

It is the balance and interplay between these hormones which regulate the specific events that make up the menstrual cycle.

Hormones start to do their thing at the onset of puberty.

Periods happen in a woman generally every 28 days and lasts for roughly 5.

In those 28 days the womb is building up a lining of blood and cells to support a fertilised egg.

If this egg is not fertilised then all this extra blood is shed by the cervix contracting (which causes cramps).

The blood is extra blood specifically for this purpose and is one of the most hygienic and clean substances to come from the human body.

Hormones are also very high at this time so mood swings are common... but cramps are also a reason for that!!!!!

PS... why do you want to know this??

Are you talking about menstruation?! A period is when a woman's body gets rid of the uterine lining, when she's not pregnant. The blood and tissue is the lining of the uterus. The reason for a period is cleansing. If the old uterine lining doesn't get flushed, it can cause serious problems. It usually happens once a month.

I hope this is the answer you're looking for.
