It is FOOTBALL not soccer and when ever i have gone to the States or Canada i have told them it is FOOTBALL.

We invented it way before the Yanks came up with American Football, so from now on football is football and American Football can be known as American Soccer so HAH

As with alot of things, we are more and more influenced by the US.

Football is Football, not soccer. If they can't think of a name for American Football that's their problem. Football is our game and always will be.

American Football could be called 'Girls Rugby'. Do they need all that padding???

Football is football with a round ball that other game was only invented by the Yanks because they can't play football. Hey let's invent a game ourselves and call it The World Series. Just don't tell anyone else about it or everyone will want a game. Baseball that's just a game of rounders. Kidstuff.

I love American Football, but being English the word 'soccer' is a no-no. Its football.

"Football" is a general term used for American Football, Soccer, Gaelic Football and Austrailian Football.... they are all defined by the terms used above. So, using the word football in a conversation you would actually be refering to the above sports as a whole unless you've already specified that soccer is your focus.... BTW how do you know that soccer was invented before Gaelic football... I personally don't but I'm sure the Irish could very possibly have been playing "football" long before the English were, whatever the form.

Football will always be called football. Soccer is used so people don't get mixed up with American football. Also it was the Scot's who gave us football.

I'd like to call it football but here's the thing.

Soccer actually comes from England. There used to be 2 diffrent kinds of football: Asoociation footabll which was nicknamed Assoc and Rugby football which was nicknamed Rugger. Later on Assoc turned into soccer because soccer was much easier to pronounce.

No I want to stick with the current American and European names. That way I can easily wind up any American I talk too. Europeans are at least aware that football could mean many different games.

eg.
"So what sports do you follow, mate"
"Hockey and Football, I'm not really into basketball."
"Hey, your right Netballs' for the girls, Hockeys' good though, all those short skirts, but not on the Indian men though, ugh. Rules is a good game though, hey?"
"???????"

IMO (not humble at all):

Association Football is called football, as the majority of it is played by kicking a ball with your foot!

American football is called American football, but seeing as you don't use your foot much, and the ball isn't ball shaped, it really needs another name.

Rugby football is called Rugby. Same principles on name as American football, but at least rugby has an alternative name.

Soccer is what Americans say. It annoys the hell out of me. In fact, all Americanisms annoy the hell out of me.
