Of course there is. Abuse is abuse no matter what form it comes in. I don't have very many friends and am very mistrustful of people everywhere I go. I was teased and beat up in school for being smart and talking too proper and it was hell for me every day. I'm 31 yrs old now and sometimes I feel so paranoid, like someone's just waiting to push me down in Wal Mart or going to bump into me at the grocery store. If I go to the store and it's crowded, I'll wait til it's nearly closing time so there's not many people or if the store is open 24 hours, I go in the middle of the night when there's no one there. If your kids are getting picked on by bullies I suggest you get involved immediately and put a stop to it. My mom didn't really seem to care and I know it has damaged me.

Yes and no. Yes, I will always be a bit pissed that the adults who were supposed to protect me didn't and that the brutality of the schoolyard was written off as kids being kids as though children had absolutely not responsibility to act morally or compassionately and the adults had no responsibility to teach them.
However, I think my experience with schoolyard bullies made me a stronger and more compassionate person in the end.
Edit: I think it also needs to be pointed out that the only common factor on all of the school shootings is that the shooters were brutalized by classmates. We adult need to step up and teach children to treat each other with respect. It's not longer just a matter of raising decent human beings - as if that wasn't motivation enough - but for their own safety as well.

Yes, my husband happens to be one of those kids, and he has huge social anxieties from it. He can't be in a crowd of people he doesn't know and function properly he's very withdrawn. It sucks that people have to be A holes when were kids.
I too use to bully kids around, I guess no more than I was picked on, but now that I see how it's affected my husband, I really truely feel bad for some of things I did as a kid to others, mean **** man.

I think it all depends on the emotional constitution of the child. IMHO, the greatest damage comes from parents and teachers that won't allow a bullied child the right to put his elbow into his tormentors cranium.
