have to get a good filter system ,that the most important, beside a good filter system(includes a place where bacteria can stay in the filter, where sunlight will not kill them) ,open ponds have to have healthy bacteria in the pond ... it will help to clean algeas out ,but i will take a long period to built up healthy bacteria,u could source from aquarium store to get the bacteria, another usefull is to have shades to your pond because sunlight help to multiply the algea very fast, and do not keep too many fish in the pond it also will affect the water quality.i have a 40 feet by 40 feet by10 feet pond also an open pond it took me 3 years to get sparkling water. so all de best, u could check momotaro koi farmthe bacteria house they provide is very usefull

You will need to treat the water. If you have fish in it, there will be considerable down falls. I would recommend plants and filtration. You have to filter out the water to get rid of the junk. The pond will also need a fresh water supply. I suppose you fill yourself which is fine, but the water you put in there will have to be treated for chlorine if you have fish. Well water works very good, because it doesn't have the chemicals city water does. Algae eaters are great to keep the algae to a minimum. Once again, if you do not plan to keep fish, buy an algae killer.
Anyway, Good Luck

using pond barley will help with brown or murky water, if it is green you need to shade the pond with fake plants and add an algae destroyer made for ponds ,also take you water in to a local pet store and have them test you ph and amonia
