What's up for forensic experts?
What are the prospects for a forensic expert? What are the colleges that offer the course and what is the admission process?

Forensic science is primarily concerned with application of scientific knowledge in criminal investigation. Using state-of-the-art technology, forensic scientists convert the clues collected from a crime scene into evidence admissible in a court of law.
To take up a Master's course in the field, you need to be a graduate, preferably with a first division, in either of the following subjects - physics, chemistry, zoology, botany, biochemistry, microbiology, B. Pharmacy, BDS or applied science.
An inquisitive nature and concern for accuracy are the main attributes one should possess to make a mark in the field. An aptitude for scientific analysis is essential.
The National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science, New Delhi, conducts training programmes for students as well as in-service functionaries of the criminal justice system.

Admission into the course is generally through an entrance examination or as per the prescribed guidelines of the university or institute concerned.
There are a variety of options for forensic professionals. They can specialise in subjects as varied as medicine, engineering, fingerprinting, insect study, languages, geology, etc.
They can find employment with law enforcement agencies, police, judiciary and investigative services run by the Government as well as private agencies. They can also work as teachers in institutes that offer courses in the subject.
Government organisations such as the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) require people with such skills. Crime cells of state police forces hire forensic experts as investigative officers.
