I just wondered because I really love certain names for when I finally have my own baby but am really put off by the sheer number of children who already have the same name - is this just me?

Ella (or Ellie), Caitlin and Libby are amongst my favourites but there's a lot of them around.
I adore the name Carmen (very rare around here) but not sure if wound sound odd with it being a spanish sounding name and we're both white brits...

A child feels v proud when she is told that her name is special. If you like Carmen , go ahead. You like the name , you love the baby , where is the problem?

I totally agree! I just don't understand why anyone would name a baby a common name. I feel like my baby is special! It doens't need an average name!! My son's name isn't weird, but it is rare, so I never put it on boards like this because I don't want it to catch on. We have a friend who named their son Jacob, and someone mentioned that it was the #1 name in the US last year, and she excitedly said "I know!". I am totally the oppposite. I don't want a commonly used name. PS - Carmen is pretty. I am a teacher and I currently have 10 Caitlyns or various spellings!!!!!!! Also - Aidan is getting very common fo r a boy.

Yes, when I picked my daughter's name almost 7 years ago I didn't know of any children with her name. I would never have picked one of the common, trendy names. Unfortunately, her name is now in the top 10 list of baby girl names. Unless you name your kid something weird it's hard to give them a unique name because within a few years there will be a new cycle of trendy names. I do have the comfort of knowing that in her age bracket it's still not a common name, my friend didn't get so lucky. Her daughter's name is Emma, and every time we are out and she calls her daughter, at least 2 other little girls answer.

I think it does - before I had children I was really set on certain names - two of these Joshua and Emily then became really popular and when my Son was born, Joshua has been the most popular boys name for about 5yrs in row and every other child seemed to have that name, so I had to think up something else!

I really liked a particular name years ago, before I ever became pregnant, and during those years, the name suddenly became very popular. It is very common now, but I liked it so much I used it anyway. It is spelled different ways, so I picked one I liked best. And I gave my daughter a less common name for her middle name. I never wanted anything popular, but I guess the way you think about things sometimes changes. Oh well...

Yes i think so. I wanted different names for my children but without being too weird and we thought we chose unusual names until my eldest started school then we found out about a load of other kids with the same name.

So i suppose the moral of the story is to chose a name you like regardless of it's popularity or unusualness.

I know what you mean. When one name is very popular you can be sure that in their Kindergarten there will be Brittanty #1, Brittany #2, etc.- or whatever the popular name is.

I named my boys names that were popular though, just because they were my favorite names and I didn't care.

Best wishes! What names are you thinking of?

Sort of. My daughters names are Jordan and Sarah. Jordan for a girl because a little more popular several years after I named mine that name. She's the only female Jordan in middle school and my daughter Sarah has never had another Sarah in any of her classes and I don't know that many girls with that name either.

I live in Ireland and I named my daughter Jasmine. That's an Asian flower and isn't popular here at all. But I liked the name and everytime I tell someone her name they all say how beautiful it is. I think Carmen sounds lovely. Go for it.

My parents tried to get me a different name. So I tried to do the same for my first born. But as it turned out we both had very popular names. Jennifer & Kayla.
I like different names names. Based on heritage or religon or a combo of mom and dads names.
