a couple of choices.
Live trap, dead trap, or gun.
My experience with these rodents if you use a live trap and release even 20 miles away they will return.. Best thing it to kill them.

Your local municipality MIGHT "loan" you a trap. Put it near a groundhole opening, 6-8" away and put in apple slices and lettuce. Cover the trap with burlap and check it every couple of days. Keep in mind there might be other holes around the house....they're like Viet Cong tunnel rats...I found 2 other holes after finding the first. I covered the holes in the holes rocks and dirts and plopped a big stone on TOP of that hole. Yesterday it was already OFF and the groundhole is digging in the same spot! Trap it....drive it MILES away and let it go. They say they don't like the smell of olive oil too. If the groundhog returns.....a .177 pellet gun would work IF you can see them. ( They usually come out at night. )

Depending on the area you live in, it might be a good thing, just keep him fed, you'll have no mice, etc. I keep spiders in my garage, it keeps the fly's dead. If it's intruding your home from below the groud, then try feeding it away from your home, like put bacon in a trail or something, so it comes out at night, then if it is violent, put poisen in the food, if it's not violent, then please try to relocate it. I might sound wierd, but all animals and species of our earth are an important part of our life too. That ground hog is just trying to live, like you and me, and it might have a family under your house too. Please try to get to know it, and see what it's up to before you kill it. Well, that's my answer. Ron

What is so bad about a ground hog?
Can it be trapped in a live trap and removed?

Spread around some "Moth Balls" or "Moth Crystals" especially done into the burrow. They hate that smell and will move to a different area.

Smoke him out with a flare. Then beat him in the head with a shovel. Or shoot him in the head when he pops up.

Ask him politely to leave or you will be forced to get an eviction notice.
