I don't think it's safe to "diet" while she's pregnant, but it's certainly a great time to get in shape. My wife was overweight when she first got pregnant, and took it as a good time to start eating better and exercising under the advice of our doctor. Throughout the entire pregnancy she only gained 5 lbs, and we have a very healthy baby boy.

I personally wouldn't diet, though I am on a diet for gestational diabetes, that's different. If you don't want to gain too much weight, you should look up pregnancy eating plans and talk to the doctor. I found that some women (including me) lose weight during pregnancy because of better eating habits. A lot of women make the mistake of thinking they can eat WHATEVER they want while they are pregnant, when really, this is the time that you should eat the best for you and the baby. Congratulations and good luck!

Dr is right but he should be in control of her diet plan. Being very overweight can complicate pregnancy and delivery. Why have a caesarian and risk further complications when losing some weight will reduce risks. All she has to do is walk and change her diet to include 3 healthy low fat meals. Dr really should set a plan for her and monitor it. Hope all goes well.

It's not good to "diet" during pregnancy, but if your SIL is overweight already, her doctor can point her to a pregnancy dietician that will give her a healthy eating plan. Ultimately what matters is that she eats the correct types of foods so that her child gets the nutrients it needs.

That being said, a friend of mine had gestational diabetes during her pregnancy. When they put her on a low carb diet, she lost about 15 pounds, but the baby still got all the correct nutrients and was a healthy 8 pounds.

No you should not diet.
It is not healthy at all. But altering your diet increasing gentle exercise and other things will help.

What has her weight got do do with labour and delivery? I know of other women who are overweight alot and still delivered normally. In one case noone could tell she was pregnant for ages they just thought she had got fatter.

My ex aunt was a xxxxL and had normal deliveries for all but one and that one she admitted was because she could not be stuffed with labour and delivery not medically.

Does your your sister inlaw have a heart condition, diabetes, drud addiction or alcoholism in these cases weight will affect normal delivery.

I have 2 sons and have 4 weeks left on my third.

She needs to find a better doctor. This one sounds like a quack. What she needs to do is figure out how many calories she should be taking in, add an extra 100 or 200 for the growing baby inside her and make sure she's eating healthy foods- NOT JUNK!

I'm 26 weeks pregnant and have been on the South Beach Diet. I've been on it for over a year now. I'm not over weight though. I have Type II diabetes and my doctor told me just to continue my diet while I'm pregnant. Plus it's healthier for the baby if the mother eats healthy.

Tell her to cut down on carb intake, but only slightly at first, see how she goes, then over time gradually introduce foods back in to diet once desired weight loss has occurred, but avoid binging. Also just regular walks. I personally don't agree with dieting during pregnancy but if a Doctor has suggested it perhaps there's good reason to be dieting. Make sure you have good multi, fol-ate and iron sups.

Is your sis on a healthy eating plan already - if its the same doc then he should have advised this before she was pegnant as well - get her to ask her doc for an advice sheet on what she should be eating so she knows for sure - I know people who have used the slimming world programmes and carried on through pregnancy so as long as its just a healthy eating plan this may help her.

Do it very carefully and under doctor's supervision- needs to make sure she gets enough nutrients for the baby and her- and you wont find that in junk food and soda pop. The weight must be a health concern- because most ofthe time doctors say don't during pregnancy.
