You're not going to absolutely need it until after December of this year because the government has already said that. So if i were u i would start getting one right now because by the looks of it you will be traveling a lot more.

No, you don't (not yet). But I think it's easier to carry around a passport than your birth certificate and your photo id. Looks like you will need it eventually after the new year.
