I am about to choose what to train as a teacher, however I am confused. I originally thought I just wanted to teach elementary, but I am unsure whether I should, or should I train as Secondary, and if i don't like it after a few years, retrain for elementary???

I have not done any voluntary work in secondary, and the last time I was in a secondary school was when I was sixteen. I have however, done many years of voluntary work with both kindergarten/preschoolers as well as elementary and thuroughly enjoy it.

My heart is telling me to go with elementary, but I worry there aren't that many jobs as in secondary and I may well be closing down my options.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I need to get my application in in the next two weeks to stand a good chance of getting the provider nearer to my home. Please help!!!

Thank you. x x

Definitely go with your heart! I teach elementary grades 5 and 6, and I absolutely love it. If you are worried about getting a job you can always minor in special education because they always need teachers there. If you don't want to do that you can always relocate to a place that is in need of teachers. If you get you foot in the door of a district that is always a good start. If you are already in college you should discuss your options with a counselor because they can help you to make the best choice. Good luck, teaching is a wonderful and noble profession.

I would go with what you fell most comfortable with, I work as a teaching assistant and cover supervisor in a primary school and the size of some of these kids is frightening. I am 5ft 7in but some of the children in our school are over 5ft and still growing.
I wouldn't narrow down your options until you have had a taste of both types of school, see if you could do some volunteer work in a secondary school before you decide. Good Luck with your training.

Are you able to do some voluntary work in a secondary school, this would be the best option, but you do have to be thick skinned in a secondary school now as some of the kid will batter you confidence. i would say follow your heart if you want to teach younger kids do it. i think it will be more rewarding knowing that you have taught that one child to read, write or even tie their shoe lace.

Follow your heart....

Good luck

I did a few years post-doc teaching at Glasgow Uni, but I have also taught in a college, at secondary school and for 15 years at Primary level. It sounds silly but they are all good. I liked the College because if you didn’t do well people left your class. It is great knowing they are there because they want to be. But kids are fantastic. They own you and you are their teacher. They might be awful classes (we all get them sometimes) but you still know you are special to them. If you feel that is for you choose Primary otherwise go for older learners

Hi! Congratulations! I would go where your heart is telling you. You have to love your job. Although being certified in many areas certainly opens your options to many more jobs. My first love was early elementary but I got certified in preK-6, reading and special ed to open up my job options. Think about it. If your love is elementary go for it but maybe add some other things to it to open yourself up. You'll find your niche also when you start taking classes and student teach. Good Luck to you.

It sounds like she desires to get into the lecture room and truly figure out what she needs to teach. English in Japan, historic past in severe college, or ordinary education - it truly is all around the board! English and historic past is going to require distinct courses, yet at my college ordinary and Secondary education majors are completely distinct important tracks. With one you study this technique as an finished and the different you study the certain subject of the important. it truly is compared to double majoring or minoring; previous the necessary center courses the necessary courses are thoroughly distinct. i imagine she ought to decide on first which age she needs to teach. 1st grade and severe college is like nighttime and day.
