I notice you've added your question under the category of "computers & Internet", so i take it this must be a PC mouse you're referring to. Take the ball out of it and it won't be able to go anywhere........

The best way to catch a mouse is without a mouse trap. Use coca cola and put it in a small cup or in the lid of the cup where the mouse will roam. The mouse cannot burp so the built up carbon from the coke will kill the mouse, and the mouse cannot resist it cuz they love coca cola. Another way is sticky paper, disigned for mice, it will not kill it, but you have to weigh down the paper so the mouse does not get away. You can buy this too at pet stores.

I've already used glue pad 3 times very successfully. After the mice are cought, the most humane thing you can do is put the whole thing in a bag, and place it in front of your car's tire, or if you are less disgusted, step on it, like I did(I didn't enjoy it, but I was mad at the devastation the mouse did). The mouse once caught in the trap will probably never function normally, and it is better if you end it's suffering quickly.

A humane trap baited with chocolate. Chocolate is a much better bait than cheese!
Release the mouse outside, away from your house (of course) in a park or open space.

If you catch it, you need to release it at least a mile away from where you caught it otherwise it will find its way back. But, where there's one, there's usually more.
Hold On, you've put this in the 'Internet' category! Doh, stupid me, its a wind up! The mouse is already in your hand!

The best way is to get a glue pad, from the nearest exterminator company. You can add chocolate, or peanute butter, but you have to spill (pretend) a couple nights before, just small amounts, then put the glue pad down, with the spilled peanut butter or chocolate in the same place.. You will wake up to squeeling little mice. Then you have to either kill them, or tear thier legs off to let them free. I know this sounds harsh, but You are the one that asked the question. I just kill them, because they will multiply quickly with or without legs. Ron

Catch it by smearing peanut butter all over the trigger of the trap.
The reason: It forces the mouse to stay on the trap longer to eat the peanut butter.

There is a humane trap made by The Big Cheese that kills the mouse by breaking its neck, rather than its back. You get a swift, guaranteed kill and you don't have to touch it.
It's the little white pair of traps from http://www.thezapper.co.uk/acatalog/Pest_Control_Online_Electronic_Rat__Mouse_Zappers_Cages_and_Traps_1.html
Also available from many hardware stores.
