Survival and improvement as individual, the species and ultimately for all life. All life (not just animals or humans) shares this common purpose. Some have very specific functions within the wholesomeness of life, imagine for instance life without all these pesky flies! At first it may seem like the coolest event since the dinosaurs came to their end, then when we all notice how turds pile up on the streets, on the savannahs and jungles we cannot but have much respect for these dung feeders. There is something to say for almost any specific life form, though it always boils down to a seen or unseen functionality in the whole setting of life.

On a more individual level life lives to experience life, no more and no less. Which would probably be valid too if we were to see life in all its diversity as one entity.

There are 8,400,000 species in the universe and each is a manifestation of a desire to enjoy the world in a particular way. The Lord allows the eternal spirit soul the freedom to try and enjoy this material world in a state of forgetfulness-- forgetfulness of the spiritual nature and forgetfulness of our relationship to the Supreme Lord. When the eternal spirit soul desires to forget his own divine nature and his relationship to the Lord, the Lord directs the material nature to cover the full knowledge of the spirit soul with ignorance which manifests as two kinds of material bodies -- the gross body made of skin, blood, muscles, bones, etc. and the subtle body of mind, intelligence and false ego. But since the material energy is always changing, the body must at some point die and the eternal spirit soul much then go to a new situation, a new mother to get another body. We are the eternal spirit soul within the body, the body is just the vehicle we ride in temporarily. A person who may be a human one life may be a dog or a tree or an amoeba the next life. The same spiritual energy that gives life to the human body also gives life to all species of bodies. The body we get depends on our desires and our activities. Some people are basically animals in human form, so they will be given animal forms in their next life to fulfill what they deserve. The animal bodies exist to fulfill the desires and rewards of the spirit souls in this material world.

To have more animals!!! Duhhhh. Refer to Genesis if U hav further doubts. Where does oil come from? good earth to grow? Pets. Food. Man was given dominion over the animals. To love them, help them, raise them, and make their lives better, It was not til after the Flood, that men killed and ate animals. Animals didn't kill mankind, either. Only after the Flood. They also serve to get rid of the other carcasses of dead animals. Well, vegetation too, I guess. Makes ariable earth. Not sure I spelled that right. Arable? Oh well, so U can grow things. But they DO reproduce!!!!
