Funny how I have been pondering on this for a while... sometimes I watch again all these fun movies from the sixties and I think that our world would still be catchy and flashy and hip if it had gone down that path instead of the one it took in the 70's and beyond... what I mean by that is that computer and electronics technology could still be developed to serve society but in different, more tempered way.. I think that there have been qualitative choices that were made in order to speed things up to a maximum point.. perhaps one day we will know more about this.. at some point I wonder whether it's not just done in order to drive consumption up .. it seems more like they wish people to be preoccupied with gadgets and nothing else.. equipment breaks down or is useless in 6 months to a year, or it becomes obsolete technologically, there are no spare parts, and if there are it costs you more to repair than buy a new one.. what a smart way for corporations to drum up sales and go to the bank and ask for development loans based on future/anticipated sales.. in the meantime are landfills full because of all this junk ?? no problem, we'll jetisson our garbagge in space.. I don't believe I've even scrached the surface of what you are hinting at..but I don't wish to make this a long answer.. one last thing.. you are not alone in your thinking

Oh, how true. I've felt like that for years. With me it's music and "celebrities". I turn on the radio or open a magazine and I haven't the faintest idea who or what anybody is talking about.
My advice about new technology is, don't be tyrannised. I kept my last TV for 18 years and only parted it with it because of leaving for a new country with a different transmission standard. It still worked perfectly. As for cell phones which send e-mails, reproduce movies, store 5 million songs and dance the lambada for all I know, just ignore them. They'll all be superseded by something else even more expensive and confusing tomorrow anyway.
I've thrown away my earphones and talk to people in public places instead. Some people think you're a perv if you open your mouth to a fellow human being face to face rather than down a cell phone, but you'd be surprised how many people (older ones especially) are delighted that someone else even notices they exist.
If it's any consolation, my parents were saying the same thing 30 years ago too. "It's all going too fast!"

You say you're 33, I feel the same and I'm 21!
Everyone I know has laptops faster than my home PC. I just got a new phone, I know it does lots of stuff, but I don't know how to use half of it. We used to play cards in between lectures, now we play some multiplayer game on someone's laptop. Virtually everything I do involves a computer - I don't have a CD player any more, I play them all through my PC. I get nostalgic about Windows 3.1, moreso for DOS. I felt really old when I realised that Windows 95 came out 11 years ago!!

Yes and no. I agree it's speeding and I've got to stay with the times, but it's not just the speed at which this stuff is being developed, it's the cost associated with trying to keep up. Camera on your cell phone? Well a picture is worth a thousand words:
1. You're in a car accident - snap some pic's and no longer is it your word against the other drivers.
2. My niece, mom of a 1 year old, lives 40 km from Ikea. I live 8 km. I go to Ikea snap some shots of throw cushions she wants and e-mail them to her and she says yes buy or no don't. I then can take them to her next time we get together.
Progress and technology are good - within reason.

The growth rate of science and technology is amazing. What, with websites being cloned, new software and hardware available everyday, voluminous data on the dynamic Internet and its dynamic web pages ! It's difficult to harness all this information. The destiny of human beings, itself, seems to be at stake. We live in virtual reality, cyberworld overlapping the real world. Then, there are those cozy-sounding nukes, chemical and biological warfare, plus tampering with genetics, space-science and space medicine and many other complexities! Everything, is so highly confusing, that the very best of us, feel insignificant and also insecure! Human tolerance and values, also, seem to be on the decline, in consumerist societies which may well end up consuming themselves (i.e., the societies) !

I sometimes feel like you... though you're 33... I'm only 22!
But what stresses me most is that I really LOVE new stuff... so i feel terrible when there's something new in the market that I don't know how to use and what it can be useful for.
Another thing is that it's quite costly to keep the pace with technology.

yes, many of us do. but u dont have to feel bad. just question where everybody is running to? what is their destination? no body knows. people are running because others are running and they are mortally afraid of being left behind. but what are they gaining in this run? losing their peace of mind, getting grabbed by fear and anxiety. sorry, i am not for this madness. i am happy with my small radio and tape recorder.
others think they are progressing; but they are truly regressing - in their humanitarian values. racing ahead to get back to brutality???
