California does not have legally recognized gay marriage. Only the state of Massachusetts has legally recognized gay marriage. And both of you have to be a legal resident of Mass in order to get married.
I live in Texas and last year the homophobes of this state pass a law that said Texas does not recognized gay marriage performed in any other state or country.
You need to check to see if S. Carolina has a similar law.

A gay marriage is only recognized (valid) in states and countries where gay marriages are legal. Nowhere else will the gay couple have the legal stand of a married couple.

It will be valid in other jurisdictions that recognize gay marriage, such as in Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada and Spain. In time international agreements will be reached about this. It will take some time though.

It is only valid in the state you get married in, until all states accept it, which will never happen.
