i seem to be only 20 mtrs from wireless access point i use my lap top in the garden no trees in the way just the sea in front of my property

Is the wireless indoors and what is the building made of? The signal loses strength as it has to pass thru walls.
Put the antenna closer to the window

Check any computer or electronic store. They make larger antennas for routers. Replace the little 6 inch antenna with one of the two foot antennas and you will extend both you signal strength and range. (Usually about 50%).
