It's electronic monitoring used to locate someone or something which has the tracking devise. Most new cars have this now and all the cell phones have it. Satellites are used to pin point the locations.

GPS, 14 satellites positioned over the earth transmit location and time data. a receiver with an internal clock analyzes the signal from up to twelve of them and translates it into a location on the earth where it is. Positional accuracy for USA military guarantied to within one meter. Similar system used by Russia (formerly Soviet Union's) minimum 3 satellites for surface location, 4 satellites for elevation readings.

Satellites take images/signals from
any object, which has a transmitter,
fitted on to it. The transmitter has a
powerful antena(small size).
After the satellite takes the pictures/
signals, the signals are transmitted
to the mother station/receiver station,
where it is linked to a workstation. At
the workstation, detailed data about
the location of the object is analysed
and mapped on to the local map/
geographical position.
The data is pinpointed to state the accu-
rate picture of the object(moving or stationary).
The pictures are taken by very high
speed/high resolution camera. The
technology used is digital signal processing.
(DSP)
Modern day warfare uses this technology
and also large fleet owners, troop movement,
movement of air planes, movement of
Ships and its positions are some of the
common users of this technology.
This is a real time technolgy.

GPS or Global Positioning System helps you to tell you where exactly you are !!!
If you have a GPS tranciever then it will give you the exact position you're standing with cordinates ( Altitudes & Logitudes) with Satellite aiding

You've probably heard it referred to as GPS, like SAT NAT (satellite navigation system) All the garmin, tomtom etc units are gps.

GPS is used to find exactly where u are. There are little GPS machines looks like a PDA to find ur way.
