Yes. However in most contracts players have incentives. They have to compile a certain amount of stats to obtain the highest pay. By not playing they are not getting any stats. So ultimately they are taking a pay cut by being injured.

I honestly don't feel they should be paid over a couple million. I don't like the fact many players (NBA and MLB) can go from Hs into the Pros and make more then ppl who are risking their lives to make the world a better place (Soldiers,Cops) Then many players are demanding even more money! I would be happy making 500 grand a year playing a sport but No these guys want 10m dollar contracts

The Chargers didn't put Steve Foley on IR, they put him on the non-football injury list so they don't have to pay him.
Also, in 2003 the Jaguars originally put Chris Hanson on the non-football injury list after the "chopping wood" incident so they wouldn't have to pay him. The NFLPA intervened, and they switiched him to IR and paid him.
