Yes Carlton was portrayed as the squarist!
Probably was a bit of "shoe on the other foot"!

No, I think this question is just a bit of political correctness.
The fresh prince was just light hearted fun.

You should remember that the biggest geek was Carlton.

I agree that the biggest geek was Carlton. I watched the program when I was younger and didnt notice anything. I recently-ish saw an episode where their aunt was getting married and it turned out it was to a white guy. From memory the family weren't supportive and disagreed with her marrying him purely cos of his colour.

I'm sure for some families this may be an issue sadly but for a kids comedy I didnt think it was right. Can you imagine a "white" comedy aimed at children nowadays with the roles reversed? I don't think it would go down well.

Can you tell us any specific examples of racism you may have seen? Might help people with their answers!

No, I believe it was a show about a black american family, who had forgotton how to be black. It tackled a few issues regarding racism, and social standing. But I don't believe it was racist.

Will was there to remind them who they were and where they had come from. He was the glue that made them a family again.

You could say it was a modern day Cosby Show. Everyday black family dealing with everyday situations, including a few not-so-everyday situations along the way.

Yes, white people were the butt of most of the jokes, but they took the mikey out of themselves along the way. Carlton couldn't dance. the hired help (Jeffery) was black, a subtle juxtaposition. You have to remember that most of the white people in the show were people in places of power, so they were portrayed as Yacht Club, or Country club members. The Banks family children all went to a private school, again, priviledged white children, but the black kids were also protrayed as geeky, with Will being the only real cool one there...

weird, i just answered a question from some one who said a radio jingle saying new black music should be seen as racist as there are white hip-hop artists etc. I agreed and also mentioned the whole Fresh Prince thing, glad i'm not the only one who noticed that white people were taken the piss out of on that show! They got away with it because no one spoke up - probably too afraid their comments would be shouted down or twisted as racist. its a funny ol' world

There are not any characters in the two prepare that refuse to assimilate into society. Will finally assimilates into his aunt's relatives. Bernie Mac's nephew is assimilated into society yet he's purely slightly of a nerd. no one with the exception of Hilary (lol) pursue leisure careers. Uncle Phil is a decide and that i don't understand what's going to grew to become into reading. those exhibits are not racist. There are some blacks with those attitudes, so the actors are merely portraying those characters.

Carlton was mixed race and couldn't dance!! so i don't think it was racist towards white people,
i loved watching it from a younger age and all the characters were different, i recall plenty of white girls in the show as extras were never geeky,

is it stereotypical that white people cant dance?? maybe you saying that in racist??
i can certainly strut my stuff and im sure many white people will agree with me....

Not really, The Fresh Prince was only watched by Black People in America, it's only in England where the majority of the viewers were white.

It was more a vehicle to get publicity and fame for Will Smith.

what? it wasn't racist, if anything Carlton who was Will's step brother was the one who was portrayed as geeky etc. That show was so old anyway, I loved it when i was a kid. Why do you care anyway? and for the record I know very few white guys who can dance.

All shows tap dance around the race issue from The Jeffersons, to Good Times, to All in the Family...Humor is used to lighten a sensitive topic like race...

I never thought that. They didn't have that many white people on to make fun of that I remember. BTW, I'm white and I'll say that white people can't dance!!
