It will destroy the gear box...and it's expensive. It doesn't have to be 70mph, 10mph is enough to destroy it. I did this by accident at 2mph and a frightneing noise came from the gear box, never do such a thing.

Hi...first of all, if you like your car, never try this..:)) I am glad to see that you are only curious about it....I can tell you that for performing a reverse on a manual transmission car, the latter should be totally stopped(Implying no forward, no reverse motion--well some manual transmission can tolerate a slight motion--but it is advisable to fully stop the car), then you fully depressed the clutch pedal(This part you know but it is good to mention it) and can engage your reverse gear.
Now if by mistake you try to put your manual transmission car in reverse at 70mph(Car moving forward (or backward(In supposition)), the gears will never engage as the revolution of your main entrance gearbox shaft will not be synchronized with the reverse gear. This will result to a loud griding noise and great vibration and shocks in the transmission levers...you will be so frightened that your first reaction will be to remove your hand from the gear lever at lightning speed. This kind of mistake if performed regularly will result to severe bearing and gear worn out in the gear box and will also damage gear latches(which will result in skipping of gears...meaning that when you are driving, your gear lever (let us say for example you are on third gear) will come to neutral position without touching it.
Let us also suppose that we have launched your car at 70mph(117Km/h)now in reverse motion(Supposition of course) and that reverse gear was already engaged before the launch(Note that In an ordinary car maximum reverse speed is in range 40-50 Km/h), this revolution of the wheels at 70 mph will obviously be passed on through the transmission to your engine revolution...I am sure that this transmitted revolution to the engine will definitely be greater than 8000 rpm(RED ZONE) which is more than a normal engine can support, meaning engine total damage. Therefore, in either ways, the best advice to follow is never to try such an experiment on a manual transmission car or you will have either to buy a new transmission/engine or will have costly repair. Note that if the car was also launched in forward motion at 70mph and that reverse was engaged before the launch, the result will be the same, that is a damage of the engine(>8000 rpm and in the wrong rotation...You can also include the fact that the timing belt might break(Surely will result in engine damage) and that your clutch can burn out affecting the pressure plate and the flywheel).
Hope that these information have satisfied your curiosity and will never temp you or anyone else to put these theories into practice..:).

I doubt if you could get the gears to mesh, but you would definely skid the rear tire, stall the motor, and likely bust the transmission, the motor, the mounts, the frame, and your nose on the windshield.
I have missed a few shifts and all that happened was the gears ground a bit and refused to go in, you could feel the teeth hitting through the shifter. But missing a shift at 60 mph and putting the tranny into 2nd instead of 5th blew a four inch long piece of the casting off of the gearbox.

I've done it going 30+ Really big Jolt and the noise...I thought the engine was going to fall out...it didn't at 70mph it would be a lot worse!
I did not do this on purpose it was stupidity!

no... i haven't tried that... & i'm not that stupid nor high on drugs 2 do so!
what kind of sick person would ever think of doing such a thing!
of course... your arm will break due 2 the total distruction of the gear box... & the motor might even expload from the sudden (heavy & mighty) pressure that has come apon it!
&... yes, the car has a high percentage 2 flip, roll, or even do a strange stunt move that nobody can imagine!
not 2 mention... its not just dangerous on your own life... but it also threatens the lives of other drivers & pedestrians around (unless u try this insane move in a remote place)...
plz... don't ever try it!

go ahead if your car is quite creepy. Anyway, if the synchronizer is lose enough to let you do that, you'll f#ck up your gear box, not to mention the annoying sound the transmission does due to the grinding of the gears.
My dad's ol' car does that sound each time he engages 2nd, so he has to double clutching if he wants to avoid it (oops, i've told you how todo it)

More problems than you would want. But yes your gear box is only the beginning of your troubles IF you were to do this.

On the next episode of Jack A**, ~ ne-er... neer.. neer"
The shifter is pretty much locked inplace while driving, the gears would break the car would stop and the transmition will be history.
So what are your plans for your next show? :)

odds are it would "back-pedal" the engine, causing both the engine and the trans to become mechanically unstable. Then one or both will give out, causing your drive tires to lock up. possibly roll over, etc etc. Just a guess though.

this must be a jackass stunt, right?depending on what trans. it might not engage at all or end up snapping the ouput shaft and ruining the reverse gear.
