I play exclusively with Jim Dunlop 2mm "Delrin" picks, dark purple with a tortoise on. I think that plectrum playing gives you a cleaner, punchier edge to your playing and also allows you to play faster than with fingers/thumbs but it depends what feels natural. I buy them in bulk from www.stringsdirect.co.uk but played the price matching game with them by looking at www.stringbusters.co.uk as well. Got them for a lot less than in the shop.

The best plectrum are your Fingers baby... but Jim Dunlops can do the trick .. they are a wide variety..

when i see a bass player using a pic i remember Nicky Sixx of motley crue and automatically get mad lol
well at least the guy had the looks that was about it..

a thick one is better but it varies a lot it's a personal thing.

whether you can already play some, or can't, the best way is to go to a store, grab a bass that's similar to yours, and try out a few plectrums (if you know how to play a bit), or else have the sales guy recommend you a couple.

if you're just starting to learn it is better to take a few lessons, and the professor should be able to help

Ah no, don't play bass with a plectrum! Just use your fingers, it sounds much much better.

When I use a plectrum for the bass I prefer those blue coloured Jim Dunlop ones (quite thick) with the turtle on them, the 1mm ones.

Depends on the tune and style you prefer. House of the rising sun to quote a beginners tune, sounds good with a plectrum if you want to put guts and definition into it but if you want class style and musical skill finger pick it. Barre chords again your choice but its the same old story. If you're not too good belt it with a plectrum. You can get away with murder on electric.

I'd think the heavy gauges are the only ones you *can* use for a bass.

Go ahead & use a pick.....or your fingers. Depends on the sound you want. Paul McCartney & Chris Squire of Yes uses a pick, John Entwistle & Geddy Lee use fingers.

All GREAT bassists.

I've heard some bassists say that the best is a heavy felt pick...I prefer a heavy nylon pick.

go pizzacato, picks are for cheaters plus it ruins the bottom end, if you want to play with a pick go play guitar!!!
