Cingular just sent me a notice that my voicemail will be upgraded soon. I am afraid all my messages get lost and I don't want to set up my new mailbox again. I went thru this with T-Mobile 2 years ago and it was very annoying (this is why I switched to Cingular). Is there any way to keep my old messages or convert them into email format before they are lost forever? Why do the cell companies treat us so badly by doing this?

vinthomas has the right idea. As for them treating you badly. They are getting larger and better. The old voicemail system is probably the original one and is more then likely full. It's kinda like your computer memory. Once you load it up with information and you have to keep it where do you put the new information? You get a better system right. Why did they change from analog to digital? Because it was a better technology and it carries more conversations at one time. Another change is digital to GSM and now UMTS. Why because it's newer and people in general will use it. And it makes good sense to the carrier. How do you keep up with 56 millions customers? You need to upgrade and keep ahead of the competition and offer the latest and greatest. I work for them and my voicemail is changing also. I have no choice in it either. We are customers also. But we are also the providers.

Did they say that all your old messages will be lost or you are just assuming that with this upgragde, you will lose it. Generally operators do take backup of voice messages before upgrading it, unless some nut is configuring the system. There is also a mobile software called voice recoder which converts your voice mails to .wav or .mp3 format, but you will have to play the entire message to record it
