I'm talking about airports, cafes and the like. Is it free or what's the sysetm with which they charge you? Coz if you have you the SSID, you can gain access to a router anytime right?

Most public places are free (see also free spot link below). They do it so you may patronize their products.

For example, when you go to McDonald (most but not all are hotspots though), they will not charge you for surfing. Of course, you may AT LEAST buy anything so you could stay there. Anyhow, you will stay there at most 3 hours (when your laptop's battery run out - unless you have more than one battery!).

Public places such as airports, cafes, etc. want you to use their Wi-fi connections, and they are free of charge. The longer you stay in their place of business, the more likely you will be to buy more things. Yes, if you have access to the SSID, you can gain access.

you have to login. when you subscribe to a provider, they will give you a username and password. some providers are also selling cards, a scratch card wherein it has a username and password too. it has differnt denominations. your laptop might detect these wifi routers but you'll no be able to connect unless you have the user rights.

you can search for available wireless network. If in public place where they allow you to surf for free, you should see that the network is not password protected. You just have to connect to the unprotected network, and you can surf for free.
