I know it sounds really snobby... but go to Harrods, they have really good equipment in their sports shoe dept that measure where pressure is going to on your feet... they also properly measure your foot and have a running circuit with pressure points all over to see if there is any conflict.

I think Harvey Nicks has a similar service...

The running shoes brands are no more expensive than they would be elsewhere... this way you get the shoe that best meets your requirements rather than just buying the ones you like the look of

This is an absolute no-brainer. I wanted some specialist running shoes to train for the Royal Navy, and went to Run & Become, a shop run by and for serious (some professional) runners. It's one of Paula Radcliffes's fave shops.

They didn't know me from Adam, and I wasn't a top 'pro' running nut, but even so, the assistant spent at least an hour with me making me run to a post and back with different pairs of shoes on, while she observed me. This went on for ages, trying at least a dozen pairs, until she had narrowed it down to two pairs. It was my choice at that point, as it only came down to style.

They were fantastic. I gave her £75, and got the perfect pair - I'm up to ten miles a day, and my feet are never even remotely sore.

They're right next to St James' Park tube station down a little alleyway. Go there - it was the best customer service experience I can remember in London.

Go to a specialist running shop. They have advisors who can assess your running style/position, arch, foot shape, etc. to recommend the best fit.

Runner's World is a good place. Check out their link below.
