It depends on sex, and their stroke. Every discipline is different in swimming. A good book is (although it's getting on) Winning with Wilkie, a former UK champion. It'd be good to look up anything about Mark Spitz - who won 7 gold medals at one Olympics. He may have written a book. Try Wikipedia for him.
Good luck.

There is no one world champion. Swimming is divided in pools 50 meter competitions as well as short course competitions which take place in 25 meter pools. The styles you swim and are recognized by the FINA are four, free style, Butterfly, Breast, Back, they are divided into distances or 50 to 1500 meters and every style mixed by distance has a medal and a champion. After that come long range swimming in open water and this is not a recognized Olympic competition.

There tecnically isn't jst one there are many of them such as Natalie Coughlin, Katie Hoff, Micheal Phelps, and Ian Crocker. It is almost impossible to be good at every stroke. i'm not sure if there are any books about them you'd have to go to a library and check.
