I am amateur in this respect so do not expect me to have enough knowledge. So give the answer in a very simple way that I can grasp what you mean to say.

it depends on what you want to put up in your site --- there are websites that give you a limited amount of space/bandwidth (how much people can access your website in a day) for free depending on what you want to do.

If you specifically want to:

*blog (web logging/online journal) - try blogger.com, wordpress.com, etc. they have user-friendly tools to get you started

*photo album - try yahoo!photos, flicker, picasa, photobucket, etc. same as blogs, they have ready-to-use access for you to upload and organize your pictures

*personal website - try geocities.com, xanga.com, angelfire, etc. i believe they have easy to use templates and you could look at the codes and experiment with it until you learn what code is for what..

you may also want to use MS Word/ MS Frontpage/ MS Publisher to design webpages too, and use the code generated from it and paste it into your website.

ultimately, just have fun experimenting and learning :) good luck! :)

First you must be having an account with Yahoo that's how you are asking this question, go to http://www.geocities.com and login there with your yahoo login info, create an account for which you don't have to do much. Once you have an account with geocities you can jump start making your free website. Its totally free. There are other free web hosting services too but if you are new start with geocities its the best.

Yahoo has geocities. They have templates to so making a website is quite easy. Their step by step process is quite simple. And the more you play with it the more you learn.
