Actually, it depends on water temperatures. Hurricanes can only be sustained when the water is warm enough, so don't think dates: think temperatures.
It's not a season - its a time frame in which a Hurricane would be possible. This is the reason why Hurricanes don't sustain or build force over land.
The time frame is generally correct, however not absolute.
Needed ingredients for a Hurricane:
1. Water temperatures of at least 26.5 °C (80°F)[9] down to a depth of at least 50 m (150 feet). Waters of this temperature cause the overlying atmosphere to be unstable enough to sustain convection and thunderstorms.
2. Rapid cooling with height. This allows the release of latent heat, which is the source of energy in a tropical cyclone.
3. High humidity, especially in the lower-to-mid troposphere. When there is a great deal of moisture in the atmosphere, conditions are more favourable for disturbances to develop.
4. Low wind shear. When wind shear is high, the convection in a cyclone or disturbance will be disrupted, blowing the system apart.
5. Distance from the equator. This allows the Coriolis force to deflect winds blowing towards the low pressure center, causing a circulation. The minimum distance is 500 km (310 miles) or about 5 degrees from the equator.
6. A pre-existing system of disturbed weather. The system must have some sort of circulation as well as a low pressure center.

Finally... some people know the hurricane season is June 1 to Nov 30!!!
It has been a pretty slow season this year. Ernesto was nothing more than a light sprinkling of rain!
We'll have to see what October and November hold.

Well, it isn't just the "Florida" Hurricane season, its nationwide. lol.
Anyway! It beings June 1 through November 30.
It's been pretty quiet so far this year, so if you are visiting sometime I wouldn't be TOO worried about it.

June 1 to Nov. 30. The peak is Sept. 10. This year, EL Nino seems to be keeping the huricanes away from Florida.

Season is June 1st to October 31st, but there were tropical storms out in the Gulf of Mexico until January last year. Our motto here is just do it.
