as above and very carefully. It is very easy to make a hole too big if your drill isn't held very steady. Better to use a hand drill than an electric one, plaster is not difficult to drill.

Is it plaster or plasterboard? Rawl (wall) plug must be the correct type for plasterboard. If it is just plaster it may be too soft to take a screw and you will need to go straight through it into the brick or wood.

If you have a timber-framed house, take further advice. You do not want to drill into the cover protecting the frame nor the frame itself.

Drilling Into Plaster

The other answers are all good. If it is a true plaster wall though.
You may put a piece of scotch tape on the area that you are going to drill through. That helps to not chip or crack out any plaster while drilling. Then, for a secure anchor, use a plastic insert to put into the hole and then the screw screws into it. 'the hole has to be a little larger then the insert and then when the screw is going in will force the plastic insert tight into the hole. They can be found at any hardware store.

For a heavy mirror you should use wall anchors. There are bolts with metal toggles that grip the back of the plasterboard but the newer plastic plugs are easier to use. You will need to drill appropriate sized hole, place the plugs in the holes. When you tighten the screw, the plug is pulled towards the back of the plasterboard and it spreads out, forming an anchor. Alternatively, you could locate the wooden battens supporting the plasterboard, using either a stud-locator or tapping the wall and checking with a small gimlet, and screw directly into the battens (known as studs). This will be much stronger but the studs may be hard to locate and may not be where you want to place the mirror.

You need a wall anchor - plastic or lead will do.

Drill a hole, insert the anchor, insert the screw and tighten it which will expand and make the anchor firm in the plaster.

These can support a lot of weight and do not damage the wall. They can be easily restored later too with a little spackle.

There is a special plasterboard fixing, it is metal with a very coarse thread on the outside and a fine thread on the inside to take the screw that you want use. Available from most diy shops or Screwfix

if it brick/block wall drill it put in a rawplug then the screw, if its a stud wall (plaster board) you can get plasterboard fixings or you could detect the stud(timber supports) and screw into those
