Lifting weights will tend to increase your muscle mass so you may actualy see a weight gain.

Cardio will increase your metabolic rate and help you burn off calories and hence lose weight.

Most training programs use a mixture of the two.

Cardio is the most effective way to burn calories. You have to do at least 30 - 45 minutes of cardio at least 3 - 5 times a week, and you have to work hard enough to sweat. However, those who have lift weights and have added muscle tend to burn more calories while at rest. So do your cardio regularly and weight train at least 2 - 4 times a week.

I am a Certified Personal Trainer.

Both methods are effective for losing and controling weight. However, each has a profoundly different effect on the body.

Weight training is anaerobic exercise, which means you are metabolizing blood sugar for fuel when you're training. Even if you train with light weights and low intensity it's still anaerobic. The benefits of resistance training are many: it tones and/or builds muscle mass; boosts your resting metabolic rate; maintains bone density; shapes your body.

Exercises like walking, biking and treadmill are aerobic, meaning that oxygen is highly involved in the metabolic process. If your pulse rate is in the 50% to 70% range of your maximum heart rate while doing aerobic exercises you'll metabolize bodyfat for fuel. Aerobics has two primary benefits: it conditions your cardiovascular system; it makes your body more efficient at burning fat by altering it chemically.

Aerobics does not build muscle, no matter how hard you try. Aerobics will not change your natural body shape like weight training does. An aerobic program does not have to be progressive like a weight training program in order to be effective.

Muscle burns calories 24 hours a day. It stands to reason that the more muscle you have the more calories you'll be burning even while resting, which makes weight loss and maintenance so much easier. Weight training is the only way to actually build muscle.

A program that combines both weight training and aerobics will give you he best and quickest results because one has benefits the other doesn't offer. Aerobics burn fat while exercising, weight training does not. Weight training builds muscle, aerobics does not. Weight training must be progressive to be effective, aerobic exercise does not.
