I bought the car in March with a years tax, which runs until the end of January 2007, but just noticed at the weekend that nothing is filled in, and it doesn't have a PO stamp on it. Am I "handling stolen goods"?

There is a good possibilty that the disc you have is either fraudulent or possibly from a stolen batch. I suggest that you check with the DVLA website.

www.dvla.gov.uk.

At this site you can buy tax online. Select tax your vehicle on line. Select vehicle enquiry. Enter the make, model and registration number of your vehicle. If it says "licence not due" that usually means that the tax is paid.

If the tax is not due I suggest that you contact your local department of transport licensing office and ask them to verify the validity, if the disc is stolen or fraudulent this might prompt an investigation. However if the vehicle is taxed it is more likely that an error has been made.

Maybe the disc was bought online? There probably wouldn't be any p.o. stamp on then? You can ring the local police, they can check in an instant whether the car is taxed (in which case the disc is not dodgy) or not. If not, you then tell them where you got it from and go from there.
Either that or ring the garage you bought it from, and take a note of the conversation, the name of the guy you spoke to and time and date, then stick it in your logbook in case you have been lied to and end up being nicked for it.
Sorry for being pedantic, if you bought it in march with a years tax, shouldn't it run out either end of feb or end of march?! That would make me wonder!

This is a seriously nickable offence. Contact the last owner, and ascertain where they got the disc. Ask them if it was hot, if not, go to the post office they bought it from. At the very least, ring the DVLA and explain the situation. You don't want a citation for something which isn't your fault.

Put December 2011 on it ... on second thoughts you need to tell the DVLA

I would contact the DVLA immediately - have your log book to hand so that you can prove it's your car.

Hope all turns out OK.

check with the dvla to see if this is stolen, or go to the police who can check immediatedly if your car has tax, mot and insurance.

That does not sound right!! If you go to this website:

www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk

Then click on vehicle enquiry, you can put your reg in and it will tell you straight away if your car is licenced or unlicenced.

Perhaps it's faded in the sun. I know mine has. Still slightly legible though.
