a small pocket book like clutch would be the most appropriate. its just enough to hold ur lipstick, compact and cash and very stylish too.
u can get it in different varieties. a gold or silver one would match most outfits and look very chic. or u can opt for a tried and tested black/white kind. u can also get ones which are embellished with stones or embroidered. these would look real hip.
u can also consider a small drawstring kind of a puch ( known as a batua) although this would be a little difficult to carry or get things in and out of it would be something eye catching and different.
the right kind of a purse can definitely make or break any outfit so make sure urs is classy, stylish and depicting ur personality

Usually one that goes with your outfit/dress. If it's more of a romantic dinner then a smaller purse is usually the best to go with. Other wise it dont really matter.

small and matches with something. Dont wear anything like a purse over your shoulder. Something small enough to fit in a glove compartment.
