Because the first ones were shaped more like a mouse and were never cordless, hence, they appeared to have a tail. They were always white with no fancy designs, so from afar they literally looked like mice.

Because it looks like one, especially the ones with cords ( like tails) There is a hydraulic coupling known as a 'banjo', because that is what it resembles, but no way can I get a tune out of one!

dude ......they look like mice
where your hand goes is the body of the "mouse" and the wire connecting to your modem is like the tail....but if you have a wireless mouse then it doesnt make sense.
