This is my 2nd pregnancy (I'm 22 1/2 weeks) and since 10 weeks I've had lower back and hip pain so bad it's often hard to walk. Sitting, standing, walking, lifting basically anything aggravates it to the point where I'm currently signed off sick! My doctor has referred me as an urgent case to a physiotherapist but I haven't heard anything back yet. In my first pregnancy I didn't get any back or hip pain until much further on and I don't think it's SPD as my pelvic bone isn't hurting, it's just across the back of my pelvis and into my hips.
Doctor has just told me to take paracetomol until I see the physio but it doesn't work for me anyway..

Any idea what it is and anything I can do to ease it??? I wouldn't mind so much if it was a big bump causing it but I've had it since the start!!!

Alll pregnancies are different and it could just be that your baby is lying further back. which could be causing the discomfort. If at all they thought any thing major was wrong they would have said so. So I am sorry to say that you may just have to ride through it. There are some ways to help relieve the pain your feeling doing your pelvic floor exercises can help as this helps to tighten up the muscles. standing and leaning over a chair rocking slightly can help shift the babies weight which will help relieve pressure and discomfort. Always keep your posture upright and sloughing will make it 10 times worse. As daft as its sound and I understand your in pain but walk it really does help make sure that you keep ypur body hydrated it is suggested that you drink 6-8 glasses of water a day but during pregnancy you need to increase this intake as your body can dehydrate quicker. Try massage treat yourself to one a week as the therapist can get right down in the tissue and really work those muscles to relieve strain and stress built up. Aromatherapy massage is great too and will help you feel much more relaxed and they can blend oils to help with the problems your having. But I do advice you check when you book in that the therapist is fully quilified in both aromatherapy and massage as it is a trained still skill as certain oils are dangerous to use during pregnancy.
I hope this little piece of advice helps as I know what your going through cause I suffer from curviture of the spine and mine is killing during this pregnancy. So I hope that both you and baby are fine and good luck.

I know this sounds a little strange but I have had really really bad back problems off and on since week 11 and I am at week 25 now. I used a product called biofreeze on my husbands back one night and didn't even think about it and rubbed one of my legs afterwards (which was actually hurting from cramps) and my leg pain was gone. I didn't feel achy anymore. About an hour later I had my husband put it on my back and it felt awesome. I slept better that night than I had in a long time. I wouldn't advice using it everyday or too often for that matter but if you are in a lot of aching pain then I would try it. Good Luck!!

I am 8 weeks now, and I'm experiencing the same thing. Before I did a positive HPT, I thought I was going to get my period, as the pain in my back is similar, but now it has started across my hips too.

I get my partner to rub Ibuprofen cream onto my back. I tried taking Paracetamol, but it didn't work for me either. The only thing which is giving me a bit of relief is the cream.

I have an appointment to see the physio too, and I'm hoping he can give me more info, but until then I suggest you try the cream and warm baths with lavender oil also help me.

I hope I helped a bit!

Going to a chiro is good first step. It could be a simple soft tissue problem, such as trigger point, most Chiros are experts in this field, how ever few chose not to be. So ask yor chiropractor Dr. If this is his scope of practice. On the other hand you might have sprained your hip joint capsule. It has similar pain patern as iliopsas trigger point as showed bythe first answe links. I think this is the case. Sprain injury are painful & take long time to heal. This injury can't bee seen on X-ray. You need to see an experienced sport chiropractor, to confirm the diagnosis. You might have to avoid any extreme sporting, how ever keep the hip moving. Avoid any form of NSAID drugs, they might relieve your pain, but taking those drugs on a regular basis can compromise your ligaments & tendom.

I had this but later on in my last pregnancy and i was refferred straight to the maternity dept at local hospital.
I was in such pain i was flinching when i walked. The consultant could not find anything wrong but concluded that the baby was pressing on a spinal nerve and she prescribed a strong painkiller codeine and lactulose as codeine causes constipation. I never got a chance to take them for long as the following week i gave birth to a healthy boy.

I think it could be your sciatica also. I have pain in my lower back and it shoots right down my butt sometimes. My hip is also hurting. I sleep with a pillow in between my legs. It's a extra long pillow so I can put my arm over it also so that my stomach is comfortable also. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

This hip pain is due to your pregnancy. Now all this happens due to constipation. I advise you to take some laxative syrup available in your country. And you have to take care of the constipation. Ater the delivery this pain will automatically be over. Avoid taking painkillers, and physio too.
