It seems like an interesting and unique culture. Ive heard that in Germany and Holland everyone speaks English. I don't want to go to a place where the people are similar to Americans. Are the people really that rude?

I go to France several times a year and have been going there for over 30 years. There are good and bad people there as there are everywhere else, but I find them generally really nice and kind. Some of my best friends are French. Each region of the country has its own scenery, monuments and culture. The food is probably the best in the world and the same goes for the wine. There are so many festivals and events which are unique and there always seems to be something to do. I recommend it highly and feel that you will receive a warm welcome and will return home with wonderful memoriies.

The French are great as long as you just try and speak the language.

What irritates people about American tourists is how loud they are sometimes. It is like they want to make sure that everyone can hear them. I think it is also annoying how some of them feel the need to share with you how things are in the States. Unless asked, please do not do this. The worst is people who want to share about what is better in the states. It is so rude to come into someones country and tell them why yours is better. I have seen this way to may times.

I think it is great that you want to come to Europe and experience a culture that is different then I think you will find that anywhere. France is very beautiful and I don't think it is that expenisive as long as you avoid eating out as much as possible. I wouldn't advice Holland but I love Germany, it is very beautiful. Italy is a also very distict interms of culture.

Also sometimes people anywhere are a bit rude because, like I live in Copenhagen and everyday you have to weave around the super slow tourists and give them directions. It isn't anything personal it is just frustrating sometimes. Just always remember that you are a guest in the country that you are visiting and nobody thinks that you being American makes you special. Not that you think that but a lot of folks seem to.

Hope that you have a good time and that you really get a taste of the culture where ever you decide to go.

Yes! Paris is magnificent. I hope to visit Lyons later this year. The other posters are right, try and learn just a little French. Oui and Merci, Bon Jour. I have seen Americans getting agitated that their French waiter doesn't speak English well enough. come, on ... your in FRANCE. They have an affinity for their language and their culture. They do appreciate your attempts. They are wonderful people who love life and love to cook. Go to some of the small cafe's or braissierie's. The Metro is easy to learn and don't forget to take a boat ride on the Seine.

Yes, I have visited France... Very lovely country!
People in Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands don't always talk English and they are certainly not like the Americans. (Meaning: every person is different, some are rude, some just want to help you out) It's true that we understand English so we can help you in your own language but we don't speak English to each other!

No, I have never visited France, however I know a family from there (they live in Paris). Some are rude, some aren't. But then that applies to all, not just them. There are people living in Canada that are from France and they are great people. I haven't heard about English speaking people in Germany and Holland, but I do know about improvements in Europe (all I know is about Czech Republic -- but because I have families there), is that people are learning English, which's a great thing. I got to communicate with my cousin. :)

I have been many times and I have never come across a rude French person, they have always been polite and courteous. Maybe, it is just the rude one's that migrate to the USA. I don't think you'll find many places over here similar to America.
