fold the same paper on its vertical lines then redo the experiment it will stay on top. thats the reason any strong roofs are made as a dome. the same reason cylinder are used.

because round is a strong shape as corners are the weakest spots for damage say if it was dropped. Also round cylinder the huge pressure inside is equal and should a cylinder should suddenly depressurize because it split the effects could be disasterous.

Corners act as stress concentrators. Worst example was the early comet jet aircraft which had square windows which led to compression failure at high altitudes. All aircraft windows now have very rounded corners.

as rightly said, sphere is good shape for tackling the forces thar are due to storage etc. But it is uncommon due to the practical difficulties like manufacture, proper seating etc for specific applications.
so to get the advantage of hoop stress, cylinders are used. circular configuration is equally strong along both the axes.
