A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of online courses which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

Read a lot of good quality literature and do copywork, dictations and written narrations from great writers (they are awesome teachers).

When doing copywork, pay attention to where commas are being placed, semi-colons, colons, etc. Make sure (even if for self-purpose use only) that you label your work, i.e.; Title of book, author, page.

Take dictations from those same books. First, choose a selection and study the sentence, sentences or paragraph that you wish to do (I do not know if you're a parent inquiring or a student) and have someone dictate the selection for you. Make sure that you are paying attention so that the one reading the selection being dictated doesn't have to keep repeating everything over and over again. The reader should be sure to make short pauses for commas, semicolons, and colons.

After reading from one of those great books, take a stab at written narrations. This is where you find out for yourself what you comprehended. Not only that but this is a chance to work on your writing skills. Mind you though, unlike copywork and dictation, this time you are writing down a story put in your own words.

Those methods force one's mind to pay attention to detail. After awhile of doing copywork, dictations, and written narrations, try and write something on your own with aid from a book such as Writer's Inc. IMHO, trying to memorize all the rules for writing can be very frustrating, whereas learning from the best writer's can be a pleasurable experience.

My children are 8 and 12 years of age and what I shared above is how my children learn writing; they are doing an awesome job.

~Whatever you choose to do, good luck. Remember though, in the end, do what works for you.

to improve reading, you have to make effort to pronounce every word very clearly, even if you do not know the word. try to break up the word. however, Fluency is very important. do not stammer or pause.
to improve essay writing, if you are writing a narrative/personal recount , you have to make your essay different from the others. not too melodramatic but your essay must stand out from the others. Eg. my first day in school
A writes,' my first day of school, i made friend with a girl and we walked round the school together..' B writes ' my first day of school i meet many new students and teachers...' C writes first day of school, i sat alone at one corner..' BUT D writes' on my first day of school, out of mischief, i hit the fire alarm. the whole school was in a chaos..' you will realise that this essay will stand out from the rest.. that's how you can score. Another way is to write an essay is to create a suspense. make the author wonder what would happen next. most importantly, you must put all your heart into writing the essay.

Turn off the TV and radio. Read instead.
Reading the dictionary really helped me improve my vocabulary. Look up the definition of any word you see or hear that you do not know.
