I think that they are great quotes. Dumbledore empowered Harry to use whatever information he had to help if it was necessary, but also assured him that he'd protect him as they were going into a dangerous situation that they didn't know much about. Harry was used to being limited in what he was allowed to do, and there Dumbledore was finally giving him permission to do what he had to do.

Dumbledore and Harry had a bit of role-reversal in the second quote, which was interesting. Harry had always depended on Dumbledore being there to rely on if he was in trouble in the past, but that was an instance where he was the strong one that was able to help. Dumbledore acknowledged that he trusted that Harry could and would take care of them both. That was significant I think. I also believe that it was foreshadowing, a sort of passing of the torch, from Dumbledore to Harry -- of responsibility, Dumbledore telling Harry that he is done leading the fight and it is up to him to defeat Voldemort.

I think there is more to the scene in the cave, with the chalice and the locket, than we have yet been told. I think it is possible Dumbledore realized the potion would sap his magical powers from him, and he could rely on Harry. But the parallel is interesting; sort of like the thing that happens with parents and children, when eventually the parents get old and start leaning on their children.

Dumbledore is about as much of a father-figure as Harry has every had, after all.

Now about Snape and Dumbledore . . . my theory is that Dumbledore was begging for Snape to do exactly what he did, there on the tower, because he had lost his powers and would be a bigger hazard to Hogwarts and to Harry as a weakened, possibly captive, headmaster than as a deceased one. After all, the portrait of him still hangs in McGonagall's office. He can do an "Obi-Wan Kenobe" routine through the portrait. ["Use the Force, Harry!"]

Snape was Dumbledore's "hollow tooth," if you will. His Dr. Kavorkian.

i think it superbly displays the progression of the characters as the book progresses. In the initial stages as Harry is still learning all the secrets he depends on Dumbledore...

but later it is dumbledore who begins to depend on Harry. It not only shows that Harry's character is growing in strength and conviction.

It is also perhaps the authors hint that Dumbledore is going to go and it is Harry who will take the story forward.

dumbledore has great faith in harry as no other, n he tells harry to have great faith in him..also,i think their bond is so strong despite being headmster n pupil.but harry n dumbledore r much more than tht being d only living ppl to face voldie n walk away alive.now since D's dead, harry is d only one.cuz harry is so close to D,so r hermione n ron.n dumbledore n harry r pretty much d only ppl who haf been thru it all mostly.
