well, yours is a very interesting question.i think that sir gary sobers was the very best all-rounder you could find or you could wish for.
but in recent times, cricket has become a world-wide game and people are more into it than anything else.nowadays people like to cheer for the people who perform both with the bat and the ball and the ratings of an all-rounder have shot up like a rocket!
the best all-rounder depends on the people's player, i.e, the one they like at a particular time.
jacques kallis is the number one all-rounder right now. this is people's view and that has what been decided.
So. i wish all the best to you in your endeavour to find the best all-rounder in the world and i also hope that you enjoy cricket until the end of your days!!!

If you mean to say all time great allrounder then naturally it is Gary Sobers. But some other great allrounders are also there like Ian Botham, Imran Khan and Kapil Deo. Presently ICC itself ranking the players on the basis of their performance.Nowadays Jac Kallis of S.A. is a topmost allrounder.

This is not as easy as everybody thinks. So..i feel it should be split into the past...pre-professional era....and that would have to be Sir Gary Sobers....and then in the modern era...most definetely Jacques Kallis....the first Cricketer to get 8000 runs and 200 wickets in both Test and One Day cricket. That is an awesome record!
